I first ate at Gee Street Kitchen a few months back and had a truly amazing experience with the cheeseburger there. I had the pleasure of going again recently where I got to sit down with Assma the manager/owner, and Kevin the head cook to talk about Gee Street Kitchen and running a restaurant through one of the hardest of times.
Assma talked about how when COVID hit she had to run the entire restaurant for two years with just two people. How it was very tough to get through that, but this is what they wanted to do more than anything, and how it was absolutely a labor of love. We talked about revitalizing Gee St. and how we’d both like to see it become another hub in Jonesboro’s commerce.
Gee Street Kitchen is not only the kind of place I admire for their amazing food, but also their sense of community. I’m a huge proponent of helping our neighbors, and Gee Street Kitchen does this by offering discounts to various professions each week. The week I went they were doing $1 off your meal if you were a construction worker/carpenter. I left as they were getting ready to go into the weekend and they were changing out the signs to offer a $1 off for anyone who worked in the health/medical field. These kinds of gestures are the type of things I think of when I think of putting our community first!
