While I was driving around town I ran into these gentlemen outside the barbershop they work at. I explained I was running for City Council and asked if I could take their photo and they happily obliged. The barbershop had only opened up in the last few months, and they were getting the front door painted. I asked about bringing my youngest son in over the weekend to get a hair cut and got an appointment setup.
Corbin and I showed up with a stack of voter registration forms. We watched cartoons in the lobby while we waited our turns and chatted with some of the other customers there offering the registration forms to anyone who hadn’t registered yet.
It wasn’t long until Darnell called us back. While he worked, we talked about what’s important in our community. We discussed how people deserve a second chance. We discussed our families and our shared experience having close friends/family come out to us. He talked about how some times you just have to put it in God’s hands and just hopes that day you’ll have a couple of customers to get by.
Later I was able to have a conversation with Timmy Perry, the owner of Dapper Dudez as well as the director of the Northeast Arkansas Barber School. He told me how important it was for him to offer quality service at affordable prices. We talked about our mutual love for the diversity and wide range of cultures in Jonesboro. He expressed how most people don’t understand how important local elections are, and he made sure that all of his employees, and students were registered to vote.
All and all I had a lovely visit at Dapper Dudez. Based on my conversations with them they represent what I love most about Joensboro. An entrepreneurial spirit, love for the city, and an absolute willingness to put our community first!
